Breast QTscan: A Game-Changer in Breast Imaging for Dense Tissue & Early Detection
At the Couri Center for Gynecology and Integrative Women’s Health, we are committed to providing the most advanced and innovative solutions for women’s health. That is why we are proud to offer Breast QTscan™, a revolutionary imaging technology delivering high-resolution, 3D breast imaging in a comfortable experience. The Breast QTscan uses Quantitative Transmission (QT) ultrasound, a technique that creates detailed, three-dimensional images of breast tissue. This breakthrough is especially important for women with dense breast tissue, where traditional imaging may be limited. Breast QTscan provides enhanced visualization, ensuring greater clarity and confidence in breast health. As leaders in women’s wellness, we believe in empowering our patients with the best tools for proactive, personalized care.
Breast health is a priority, and early detection is key. With its ability to detect structural changes in breast tissue at an early stage, the Breast QTscan provides an additional layer of insight, particularly for women with dense breast tissue or implants. Approximately 30% to 50% of breast cancers are missed by mammography in patients with dense breasts. This reduced sensitivity is due to the masking effect of dense breast tissue, which can obscure tumors on mammograms.
Several studies have quantified this issue. For instance, a study published in the journal European Radiology found that mammographic sensitivity decreased significantly with increasing breast density, from 75.0% in the least dense category to 51.3% in the most dense category. Another study in Radiology reported that the sensitivity of mammography was 71% for dense breasts compared to 82% for non-dense breasts. Additionally, the American College of Radiology (ACR) has highlighted that the sensitivity of mammography can be as low as 50% in women with dense breast tissue. These findings underscore the importance of considering supplemental screening methods, such as ultrasound or MRI, and now, Breast QTscan, for women with dense breasts to improve cancer detection rates. Both breast ultrasound and breast MRI are FDA-approved, and Breast QTscan is FDA-cleared.
To be clear, we still strongly recommend getting yearly mammography, and Breast QTscan represents a complement to it. We do not recommend replacing mammography with Breast QTscan. Rather, this technology serves as an additional tool to enhance breast health evaluation, particularly well suited to complement mammography in women with dense breasts, those with implants, high-risk women who need more frequent monitoring, and younger women at high risk. While we strongly recommend regular mammograms, we recognize that some women refuse mammography. Breast QTscan at least provides these women with an imaging option, ensuring they are not lost to screening. About 11% of women rarely or never had a mammogram, indicating a significant portion of the population that is not adhering to recommended screening guidelines.
Whether you have dense breasts, are at high risk, or simply want a more comfortable and advanced approach to breast imaging, Breast QTscan offers clarity, precision, and peace of mind—working together with mammography to give you the most comprehensive picture of your breast health.
